Women in Mining - Perth, Western Australia
About us
The Perth Women in Mining Networking group started with the idea of trying to work out how to do something proactive about keeping people in the industry. One way was to create a forum where people can get together and talk about where they have been and where they are going and all the issues created by the modern mining industry - commuting, family etc. The group has now been going for nearly five years.
An initial email mail-out in June 2003 was used to get a feel for how many people in and around Perth would be interested in some sort of periodic forum. There was a very positive response around the industry. A questionnaire at the first event provided ideas of what people were interested in getting out of this sort of forum.
The idea of the networking forums is to be informal, inclusive of all professions and jobs within mining and above all positive. It was decided to keep it mostly non-technical to keep the appeal broad. A Friday night Sundowner every seven weeks to fit in with various commute rosters was chosen.
One of the goals of the group is to allow people to find out what other people are doing with their careers, what they are doing as far as studies and families. All of this is as applicable to everyone in the industry - not just the women - and any progress or positive outcomes from such a forum will benefit everyone in the industry.
